The Nigerian Society of Teachers is the premier professional association representing all registered teachers in Nigeria. Our membership encompasses a diverse network of professionals, including basic and secondary school educators, researchers, educational administrators, educational managers, educational Councellors ,consultants, and lecturers from tertiary institutions across the country. With a robust network of state and local Government branches nationwide, we foster collaboration and support among our members.

At the Nigerian Society of Teachers, we are dedicated to addressing the professional needs of our members. We offer well-structured professional development programs aimed at enhancing teaching standards and ethical practices in education. Our regular interactive sessions provide a platform for members from various educational levels to engage, share best practices, and learn from one another. Together, we strive to promote excellence in teaching and uphold the integrity of the educational profession in Nigeria. The Society was established in accordance with Section (40) (1) of 1990 Constitution of the Federal of Nigeria as (Amended) Welcome to a community where education professionals come together to inspire and empower each other!

MISSION

To increase and ensure quality teaching and learning services that is aimed at enhancing professional competence and development of its members at all times.

To collaborate, influence, provide quality and inclusive education for all through effective participation of Nigerians, civil societies, national and international development partners as well as Government at all levels.

VISION

To guarantee Nigerian of quality professional teaching services and ensure dignity for teaching at all level.

Aims And Objectives

– To advocate for the welfare of teachers at all levels and conduct advocacy visits to policymakers, political leaders, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and relevant stakeholders to promote inclusive education.

– To promote the implementation of vocational and entrepreneurship skills training in schools at all levels and advocate for the funding of vocational entrepreneurial education in Nigeria.

– To collate documents and disseminate statistical data, educational research, and other information related to the teaching profession, and publish such materials in an official journal.

– To advise on labor conditions pertaining to the teaching profession and advocate for increased funding for education at all levels.

– To collaborate/partner with accredited teacher training institutions to ensure that individuals aspiring to become teachers receive their training effectively and at a lower cost.

– To establish a merit-based scholarship scheme for the best secondary school graduates who wish to be trained as teachers.
To partner with teacher education relevant regulatory bodies or authorities in Nigeria or development partners to establish a teaching practice funds ( TP- Find) for student teachers to effectively carryout teaching practice exercises.

Directorate of Training

NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF TEACHERS GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS

1) In accordance with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) Act 31 of 1993, any person whose name is deregistered from the list of registered teachers on the grounds defined in the TRCN Act CAP T3 of 2004 and subsequent legislation shall cease to be a member of the Society. Similarly, any person declared by a registered psychiatrist as ill and unfit to perform the functions of a registered teacher shall consequently cease to be a member of the Nigerian Society of Teachers, as the Society only accepts and inducts registered teachers by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) as its members.

2) All members of the Nigerian Society of Teachers are expected to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity in their teaching practice. Any member found guilty of professional misconduct, as defined by the TRCN and relevant laws, shall face disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion from the Society.

3) Members are required to maintain their professional qualifications and must participate in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programs as stipulated by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). Failure to engage in CPD activities may result in the member being ineligible for any society benefits or privileges.

4) Membership dues must be paid annually, and members are responsible for staying current with their fees to maintain good standing with the Society. The payment structure and deadlines for membership dues will be communicated to all members in a timely manner.

5) Members are encouraged to participate actively in the Society’s programs, meetings, and events. Engagement in Society activities is essential for professional networking, sharing best practices, and enhancing the overall quality of teaching in Nigeria.

6) It is the responsibility of each member to keep the Society informed of any changes to their personal information, including but not limited to address, contact numbers, and professional status.

7) The Society will establish regional chapters to enhance local engagement and ensure representation in various areas. Members are encouraged to participate in their local chapters for community building and professional support.

8) Any grievances or disputes arising among members should be addressed through the appropriate channels within the Society. Members are encouraged to resolve conflicts amicably and may seek mediation from designated Society representatives if necessary.

9) The Society will conduct periodic reviews of its rules and regulations to ensure they remain relevant and responsive to the needs of its members and the broader educational landscape in Nigeria.

10) Members are expected to promote inclusivity and equality in education and to advocate for the rights of marginalized groups in the teaching profession.

Adherence to these rules and regulations is vital for maintaining the integrity and efficacy of the Nigerian Society of Teachers and for fostering a professional community dedicated to advancing education in Nigeria.

14) Benevolent Fund
The Society maintains a benevolent fund to which individual members contribute. The fund is to help members and their families in distress.

15) NST -Online Community and Forums: Membership in an exclusive online community or platform for discussions, sharing best practices, and collaborative project development.

Competitions

The Society sponsors and encourages competitions at all levels, secondary schools through teacher’s training Institutions to Professional. The best NST Student of the Year Award has also been instituted

Code of Ethics

The Society has established a Code of Ethics to control the professional conduct of her members. Disciplinary actions are instituted under this code.
